Turquoise water where a mountain fell
Why go to Attabad Lake
A 21-kilometre lake created in January 2010 when a landslide dammed the Hunza river. The colour is real and it is startling — a hard turquoise against bare brown rock.
The landslide that made Attabad buried the village of the same name, displaced thousands and cut the Karakoram Highway for five years. What it left is one of the most photographed stretches of water in Pakistan. The KKH now crosses the valley on the Pak-China Friendship Tunnels — five bores totalling seven kilometres, opened in 2015 — and the lake below has become a small economy of jet-skis, boat rides and cabins built along the shoreline. Go early: the water is stillest before ten and the light on the far wall is best in the first hour.

Common questions
People do, but it is glacial meltwater and cold enough year-round to be a genuine shock. Boats and jet-skis are the usual way onto the water.
