About Khaplu Palace
The 1840 residence of the Yabgo rajas, above the Shyok river — Tibetan-influenced Baltistan architecture, restored and award-winning.
Khaplu Palace sits on a terrace of apricot orchards looking down the Shyok valley, two and a half hours east of Skardu. The restoration won a UNESCO Asia-Pacific award. Ghanche is the coldest inhabited district in Pakistan, so even August nights need a jacket — the rooms are heated.
