A 400-year-old raja’s palace — the Fong Khar — restored over seven years by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture and now run as a heritage hotel.
The finest surviving building of its kind in Baltistan, and the only one you can sleep in. Rooms are in the old fort and in the garden wing, the museum is downstairs, and the apricot orchard outside is still worked. It fills up in July and August, so we hold rooms at the time of booking rather than closer to departure.
