Why go to Deosai National Park
Three thousand square kilometres of flowering plateau at 4,100 m, open only three months a year, and the last stronghold of the Himalayan brown bear in Pakistan.
Deosai — "the land of giants" in Balti — is snowbound from October to late May and for the rest of the year is a rolling green plain the size of a small country, with streams, marmot colonies and, at the western end, Sheosar Lake at 4,142 m. It was made a national park in 1993 specifically to protect the Himalayan brown bear, whose population has recovered from around twenty animals to roughly eighty. There are no settlements and no mobile coverage. Crossing it by jeep from Skardu to Astore is a full day; camping on it is the point.

Common questions
Snow normally clears between late June and mid-July and the plateau closes again in late September or early October. Outside that window the jeep track is impassable.
Possibly, at distance, most often early morning near Bara Pani. Marmots are guaranteed. We travel with a park guide who knows where the sightings have been that week.
