Why go to Rama Lake & Astore
A glacial lake above Rama meadow in Astore, ringed with pine and fed by the Nanga Parbat snowfields. The eastern approach to Deosai starts here.
Astore is the quiet side of Nanga Parbat. From Astore town a jeep track climbs to Rama, a meadow of pine and grazing at 3,000 m, and from there it is a short walk or a rough drive to Rama Lake at 3,300 m — small, very still and backed by the Chongra and Nanga Parbat massifs. The valley is also the eastern gateway to Deosai: the road from Astore over Chilim to Sheosar Lake is the classic crossing, usually driven in the opposite direction from Skardu. Very few of the people who queue for Fairy Meadows come around to this side.
