Why go to Phander Valley
Ghizer is the quiet half of Gilgit-Baltistan. Phander is its centrepiece: a wide green valley with the Gilgit river braiding through it in an improbable blue, and trout in every pool.
The road west from Gilgit toward Chitral follows the Gilgit river through Punial, Gupis and Yasin, and it is the drive that people who have already done Hunza come back for. Phander sits five hours along it, where the river slows into pools that reflect the valley walls, poplar plantations line the banks and the local fishing is good enough that the rest house was built for it in the first place. Phander Lake is a short walk from the road. Handrap Lake, an hour further on a rough track, sees a fraction of the traffic.
