Why go to Naltar Valley
A forested side-valley above Gilgit with Pakistan’s best-known ski slope, and a rough jeep track beyond it to three lakes that run from jade to deep blue.
Naltar is the exception among Gilgit-Baltistan valleys: instead of bare rock it is thick pine forest, and instead of glacial gravel it has meadows. The Pakistan Air Force ski resort here has the country’s only chairlift and hosts national championships every winter. Beyond the village, a jeep track — genuinely rough, and the reason the valley stays quiet — climbs to Naltar Lakes: Satrangi, Blue and Bodlok, three tarns within a few kilometres of each other whose colours shift through the day. Winter access needs a 4x4 and sometimes chains.

Common questions
Only to Nomal. The last 25 km is a jeep track with river crossings — a high-clearance 4x4 with a local driver is the only sensible way up, and it is included on our Naltar trips.
