Why go to Khunjerab Pass
The Pakistan–China border at 4,693 m, reached on tarmac the whole way. Snow at the top most of the year, marmots on the verges, and Khunjerab National Park either side of the road.
Khunjerab is the point where the Karakoram Highway stops being a road through mountains and becomes the top of one. The gate itself is two stone posts, a Pakistani flag and a Chinese one, and a queue of people taking the same photograph — the draw is the drive: two and a half hours of switchbacks from Sost through Khunjerab National Park, past marmot colonies that have lost all fear of cars, with a real chance of ibex and, very occasionally, a snow leopard sighting reported by the rangers. Bring a jacket whatever the month. The pass is closed by snow through winter and generally reopens in April or May.

Common questions
Pakistani nationals need CNIC only. Foreign nationals need their passport and are registered at the Sost checkpost; we handle that as part of the trip. Everyone pays the national park entry fee.
You go from 2,400 m to 4,693 m in a morning, so mild headache and breathlessness are common. We keep the stop at the top short — about 40 minutes — which is what the body handles comfortably.
